The thing I've found about linux is different versions will react differently to your hardware. When I first tried it I had a really hard time getting my modem to work with many of them. Then I tried Suse and it worked like magic. That was years ago and after that more and more hardware devices were added. Today, unless you've got a obscure type of PC or it has strange devices, almost any version should work with your hardware.

Even with the "tiny" ones, you should be able to do a setup so it installs the barest software for devices, etc. which should free up space during the install.
