Title: Any Musicians Aboard?
Post by: Orakk on December 17, 2009, 02:11:34 AM
Do you play an instrument, sing in the shower or play trash can lids and what does it do for you?

My story - After a ten year sabbatical from the live music scene I've found myself defying the pokie revolution and find live music regaining a little traction. It was where I started, playing music you enjoy to an audience just wants to let their hair down is by far the most enjoyable occupation I ever did. Finding contentment was by accident for me at the time because I don't feel pleasure. Before the days of effective depression medication, guitar practice time was an  escape from the relentless shouting of a thousand angry voices would plague my every conscious moment so I stuck with it.

Shorter story - Strat & Marshalls in hand, set to 11 can be good for your health..  :belly:

I used to play guitar but then it was stolen. So I picked up bass and played that for many years but haven't played in about 25 years. I used to write songs, play in bands, dj...almost anything involving music. I even have dj software on my pc (windows) to mix my music before copying them to cd's.

I also have Ubuntu's music suite that I play around with from time to time. I still like creating my own music but don't have the time anymore.

Lots of folks in my family can play... Mom, a couple of my brothers, cousins, some uncles. (all of them are gone)

Me?
Can't play a lick on anything, but I did sing backup base in a rock group in the late 50's. No, you've never heard of them, but they did make one demo record, I wasn't on it.

I've spent a lot of time hanging around Philly's recording studios and was lucky enough to meet a lot of famous musicians, especially those that lived in and around Philly. Some of my closest friends are musicians and have made records or have family who did.

Really weird, back of my mind I thought we were all bros but didn't know why.

Was in a band for 4 1/2 years, one night when the gig finished, I stepped off the stage to get me drink and looked back to see what the commotion was about. Two of the band members were kicking the crap outa each other on stage.
That was that, I left there and then and have no interest in bands anymore, too old anyways.

I had a 10 year gap then wherein I got married again and finally found the meaning of life, having children. I've been playing again for the past two years but finding it difficult to get back to the pitch needed to actually be an acustic guitar player. Tend to strum pick now as it masks all the problems of fingerpicking, yeah its cheating but what the heck, no-ones listening anyways.

Attached is an oldie of mine, its about the feeling when your first baby girl is born. It was several years after I wrote this that it actually came true I'm happy to say.
Poor recording, slightly outa key but what the hay.

Quote
Lady, Lady, in your tiny arms, you hold the perfect dream
Maybe, maybe, if I give it time they'll be reaching out for me
Its crasy, its crasy, why I fear to touch, the one I love so very much

Open your eyes can you see the skies, they were made for you and me
But can they compare to what we share, for its you who set me free
Cos your my Lady, my little Lady, your my lady.

Lady, Lady, your so high above, everything I thought I'd need
Maybe, maybe, through your sleeping eyes, I'll see things differently
But its crasy, its crasy, why I love you so, and you dont even know its me.

Open your eyes can you see the skies, they were made for you and me
But can they compare to what we share, for its you who set me free
Cos your my Lady, my little Lady, your my lady.
Yes your my lady, my little baby, your my Lady

There you go Ken, not much to it but the sentiment.

Les, you looking forward to the Xmas edition of Dr Who, I am.
David Tennant snuffs it apparently.
They'll have a job replacing him eh!

Yeah I love dr who, the new guy looks ok though, hard for him to step into Tennant's shoes though, here (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1200883/His-time-come-New-Doctor-Who-Matt-Smith-begins-filming-gorgeous-young-redheaded-assistant.html)

When he bursts onto screens in the new series of Doctor Who, actor Matt Smith will play a seemingly invincible alien lifeform.

But in reality he is just as susceptible to the cold as anyone else, and needed a hot water bottle to keep warm as he filmed scenes on a chilly Welsh beach today.

The 26-year-old actor and the doctor's assistant Karen Gillan, 21, were spotted wrapped up in padded coats on location near Cardiff as they filmed their first scenes together.

Ah! Gotcha.  :bigthumb:

Jeza, could you please post up the lyrics and the mp3 in the Poems Board (http://www.ourfamilyforum.org/FamilyForum/index.php?board=35.0).  :2thumbs:
Of course if you want to add any comments about how the song and music came about and it's later history we would be loving that as well.

Use this code for the mp3... you don't need to add anything to it, just paste it into you topic.

Liked your sample.  :bigthumb:

Sticking my clever hand into an industrial bench saw ended my music en-devours abruptly for a time but has recovered enough now to be useful. Interesting thing about music is in how the brain keeps on learning even when you've not practiced for a while. Accuracy and pace are still off the mark for me but the fresh ideas are a plenty so I'm stoked to be back in the game. Pushing fifty I find fellow musicians still at it have out grown the need to self destruct so that's a plus.

All good news for the composer these days to. The one thing has changed since I started out relates to software available. In the old days the only way to get a good sound was in winding up the Marshalls to eleven and stand back. Nowadays I use GuitarRig for all my preamp sounds and plug into an El34 50/50 Marshall for live playing. Sounds great and for live playing it's the ducks guts, no more fighting with a guitar sound just wants to go off it's face which makes for a happy mixer at the desk.

Yeah, sorry about that.

But there is a lot of software available for musicians via midi for instruments, synth software (which I like now), or notation for writers. There's a lot of good free ones for linux. Most good Windows software is paid.

Nightmare is a good word 'cause it does end.  riteon

Wasn't paying attention for just a moment and thud. In that moment I knew music was over as one hand was instinctively chasing down the damaged other. Injury side I got lucky, a micro surgeon was in Adelaide at the time and was in need of a difficult case to show new techniques.  I had no bone above last joint on two fingers which looked like ET split down the middle. Is amazing how the body knows to grow those bones back in the shape of a pawn chess piece with nothing but a bit of wire to grow round.

Might sound strange but I am a better musician/person for having the time out and at this point am thankful for the experience. Mostly I'm thankful I can now play again and at an age where being content and learning to have fun is the obsession.

Sorry not required but thanks for the kind thought.

Sound cards have come a long way to have they not. With 192k being the current on-board sound standard home studio is very much doable using just a desktop.  :danban:

That's what I'm talking about. Using a midi sound card to connect your ax to the PC to record and create the notation. ;)
