Apples and Bananas + the Dehydrator
« on: June 06, 2015, 03:01:18 PM »
Got the bananas in the fridge to set a chill on them... easier to slice them that way.
We're also doing apples, they go first. (tonight for an overnight stay in the dehydrator)

Next up, get the dehydrator out of the pantry and check to see that everything on it is up for the task ahead.

Then, load it up with the fruit and wait for the big finish!  :eat:

We're using this recipe and it calls for 6-8 hours, but I'll likely go 9-10 hours to try and get a little more 'shelf life'.

Bananas should be about the same, although some recipes call for more time.

Ah! I was just looking them up before I asked and read that some can take up to 72 hours! I assume that must be for meats.

UPDATE: :hah!:

The apples turned out OK with the cinnamon and sugar dipping adding to the taste, they are still very slightly soft so I may put them back in for 3-4 hours.

Bananas stayed in for about 14 hours and they will need another 3-4 hours. Their taste is rather bland, so next time around I'll need to figure out how to fix that taste issue.

Here's a couple of pics before they get ate up.  laughing7

Maybe you might want to let them ripen more first?

Could be... one tip was to place them in the fridge so that they would chill and make it easier to slice them, I forgot and left them in the fridge overnight!  shocked003
Don't know if that effected them, but the peals turned dark, almost black.

The fridge will ripen them faster if they are not ripe yet. If they are ripe it will turn the peels black but the fruit itself should be fine.

You just need to not keep them in the fridge too long. However, you can peel them then freeze them. ;)

EDIT: Here's tips for freezing them. The link in that post refers to blanching on my old site...I need to convert that article for the new site.  :oops!
