DeskTop Recipe App
« on: August 10, 2023, 05:26:34 PM »
Hey Steve, I know that you are a bit of a chef, so here's my question.

Do you have a preferred desktop app to manage your recipes? I'm trying to find something for Kay to use on her laptop that is simple and easy. I've found some for PC and Android phones, but most cost money and that's a no go.

I've been reading articles by the lady at the link below and she has tried several apps over the years and she tells us that she has finally settled on Google Docs as her recipe minder because it's free and you can access your recipes over any number of devices.

So, Kind Sir, what are your thoughts?
Thanks... Ken.

Why, yes! I am a Kind Sir and appreciate the compliment! LMAO I'm glad that you've brought this up because I've been meaning to make a topic for for quite awhile but keep forgetting. Mostly, because they are on my tablet which I'm not usually on when on my desktop. LOL

I don't have any desktop apps, per se, but do have Android apps. I'm not sure if they have desktop apps or not. One in particular is Whisk that will allow you to save recipes from websites, etc. and can possibly do it on the desktop. I know that you'll get emails and can view them on the desktop:

On Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foodient.whisk&hl=en_US&gl=US

Here are a few others that I've found interesting:

Recipe Keeper:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tudorspan.recipekeeper&hl=en_US&gl=US

Paprika Recipe Manager 3:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hindsightlabs.paprika.android.v3&hl=en_US&gl=US

I'm always looking for others so I'll try to remember to post any that I find! :)

Thanks, I'll check those out. Some of the smart phone apps are interesting, but so far Kay is not real keen on that idea.  laughing7

Whisk does send emails and you can view them on your desktop. However, they may not show you all of the instructions and may point to the website it came from for some of the recipes. I have posted a few whisk recipes here already...

However, I'm always on the lookout for better ones. LOL

Some of the apps do help you to keep an inventory of your pantry which does help a lot and will let you know when you are low on something, etc.

Update: Whisk is now Samsung Food! Still looks kind of the same. However, I suspect that Samsung is probably starting to use AI like the rest and I personally don't trust it...I mean the AI! I have no proof of this, yet, but will keep updated if they do. ;)

Got another one and I'm now a beta tester for it. :D It also can create any kind of lists and has great features. However, you need a Complete'/paid subscription for the desktop/web one. Otherwise, you can use the free version on android or ios. The only glaring problem I've found with it is that it doesn't have voice input :tickedoff: :

Hera list of the features:

I did buy a 'Complete Family' subscription because I thought I needed it for all of my devices...not true. An 'Individual' subscription will allow you to use it on different devices as long as you use the same email address for login. ;) I found that out and did let them know it is possible to give out the email address to others and they can use it for free. I suggested that they switch to a license subscription that is device specific or can allow a certain amount of devices per license like Bitdefender does which I use. It allow up to 5 devices per license.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that it works well with importing recipes from websites. However, with the free plan you can only import 5 recipes whereas the id ones are unlimited.

I forgot to mention that it has sample item, recipes, etc. so you can see how to do things. It also has great tutorials in it as well as on the website.
