SMF 2.0 Release Candidate 2 is out for Charter Members!
« on: October 04, 2009, 10:49:15 AM »
Simple Machines Forum has just released the new "SMF 2.0 RC2" version of the forum software to the Charter Members on SMF.
... we won't have it until it goes public, the $50 per year fee for Charter Members is a little too much for GPa's budget.
:wink2:

When they release a version to the Charter membership that means that it won't be long until it goes public, likely 1-2 weeks but maybe a little longer if testing doesn't go well... but that's not expected to be the case because the SMF development team is really good at this stuff.

So, what will be the impact here on the FamilyForum?
For the short term there won't be any changes because we'll wait for a stable release of our TinyPortal 'add-on' software because we need that along with the SMF software to make up the look and layout that you see when you come to the FF. But it probably won't be that long because we've been testing a compatible version of TP for some time now.
You can see it on my test site HERE.

When we do make the change the differences should be very noticeable because we'll lose some of the elements that are available now, mostly in themes selections, most of our current inventory of themes will not work with the newer versions of SMF/TP so for a month or so there will only be a few of theme available.

More detail later.  :disted:

Here's a quote of the News Release:
Quote
Simple Machines is proud to announce the immediate release of SMF 2.0 RC2 to Charter Members. This is the long awaited Second Release Candidate for 2.0 and is one of the last steps towards 2.0 going gold. Literally hundreds of bugs that were reported after the release of RC1 have been fixed and improvements have been made to security, stability, and performance.

As promised, 2.0 RC2 boasts our new Curve theme, which has been made the new default theme. The previous default theme has been renamed Core. Please note Classic and Babylon themes have been removed from the package and are now only available by the theme site.

Major changes since the last release:

    * Inclusion of the Curve theme
    * Fixed a significant number of bugs reported by Beta Testers, Charter members, and community members.
    * Optimized hundreds of queries for faster performance (with new indexes, re-written queries etc, changes to column type)
    * Canonical link support for better search engine indexing
    * Feature: ability to have different readmes in packages for different languages
    * Feature: ability to delete languages (oops! we forgot that earlier)
    * Linktrees have been re-added to the lower-areas of the forum. Also, linktrees have been added to the admin, moderation and profile sections.
    * Lighttpd support for Queryless urls
    * Improved support for right to left languages
    * Fixed OpenID
    * Extra fields to for Advanced Profile fields to surround/enclose within other text, and to choose placement as icon or signature.
    * Several theme improvements for better semantics and standards support.
    * Moved more JS out of templates
    * Wireless links to switch back to normal mode.

Simple Machines would like to thank its Charter Members for their continued support for SMF.

Regards,

Simple Machines
