GPa's Latest Geocaching Toy!
« on: October 16, 2009, 04:10:07 PM »
GPa owes a great BIG Thank You to Sport for sending me this great new toy!  :hah:

Thanks Keith for the "Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX N100", it arrived today and works like a champ. Of course I'll need to learn to use it properly... so far I've managed to enter only one destination point that I used to navigate from our local Post Office back to Tobaccoville.

The Fujitsu support site has an owners manual that I've downloaded, so with a little study we should be good to go.

Most of you know how much GPA loves new toys.   :cool2:

It was for opening the box that the GPS came in.

Ken the maps are on the mini SD Card ....you can swap that for another if you want to load up music and use the MP3 player ....just DON'T lose the maps!!!!

I've read the manual you mentioned and it covers everything pretty well. Like I told you, I probably haven't used it more than 4 or 5 hours as it still has the factory Screen Protector on it! I got it thinking it would help with the job I had at the time; but I had been using a laptop with MS Streets and Trips and a GPS antenna , so I never really needed it; then I somehow got my hands on my TomTom, and then REALLY didn't need it...

I'm probably not a lot of help ...but don't be afraid yell if you need a hand with something I may know, I've been using GPS in one form or another for probably 5 years.
Enjoy it and let us know about your adventures mwalk

I'm making a backup of the files now.  :bigthumb:

The only thing I'm focused on at this point is how to use the coordinates from Geocache.com... they download to the GPS OK but so far I'm not getting them to actually load into the maps screen. The problem may be that the wrong type of file is being downloaded... the two 'default' maps have a file extension of '.map' but the ones from Geo are '.gpx'

Keith, is there a software package that needs to be installed to my PC?

In my reading of the pdf files for the unit, as well as some of the pages and posts that I've found so far it sounds like there is a package that must be on the host PC, but I'm not identifying it for sure yet.

You don't by some chance have the CD/DVD that came with the unit?  :disted:

EDIT: To correct my naming mistake, if you look at the quote of the original post you'll see that I called Keith by the incorrect name... sorry for the mistake.  :angle2:

Ken...it's Keith...and no I don't believe there is; I never had a problem with it ...I'll look and see if I forgot something, but I think that you are referencing drivers ...I never had a problem connecting; come to think of it all I ever did with the PC was charge the battery...I'll look around! If there is a service pack and I don't have it   I'm sure you can download it from the Man.

What day is it?  :angle2:

Sorry about the name confusion Keith.

The maps and navigation part is OK, but trying to get a geocaching map loaded is the problem. So far I'm not finding a way to do that, but there are lots of programs available for doing file conversions between the various types... just gotta find one that works for this unit.  :disted:

If all else fails use Google to get you close and then use your current Coordinates to Zero in ...North and West increase as you go North and West ..in our hemisphere

Progress!  :bigthumb:

Basically you have to treat this unit like you would a desktop PC when it comes to installing an update or a program. The only problem with that is that unlike your computer where you would see your Windows desktop when you start the PC and from there be able to install a new program, on the Pocket LOOX what you see is the GPS program (NAVIGON) and there is no obvious way to access the operating system, Windows CE.

So, while I was finding all kinds of updates and hacks for the unit there was no way to install or change anything, but that all changed after I found This Topic on the GpsPasSion Forums where a 'fixed cab file' was posted... once that cab file was loaded into the Loox unit all that was needed was a soft reset to execute the file and that made it possible to install the iLooks desktop.
That's the first step... now on to the next part of the process which is to load a Geocaching map into the Loox and have it actually read it.  :cool2:
