Sorry to hear that it died Les.  :cry2:
I always keep one or two old desktops around just in case something like this happens... it's good to hear that you have your laptop.

I use Access Manager2, it's free and works really good.
By using it I don't have to use the same passwords, or weak passwords, on every site. It will generate very strong p/w's and pass-phrases so as to keep you safe and because it stores them for you you don't have to try to remember them and you don't need to type them in when you are logging into a site, just copy and paste.  :bigthumb:

Another one that I'm starting to test out is SignupShield.

It came pre-installed to my Cruzer USB thumb-drive and seems to get good reviews. Because it's on the t/d I don't need to worry about the PC going down and it has a backup feature that *may work OK... don't know yet on that. The only problem I'm seeing so far is that the free version will only store 10 passwords, so I don't know how that's going to work but it may be OK.

What exactly happened, Les? Any errors , strange sounds, smells? What are the number of beeps that it gives when it boots, if any?

For beep codes:

It would continually shut down at intermittent times, with no warning at all, even in safe mode, the first couple of times I thought nothing of it, but it just worse, and on occasions it would get to the desktop and freeze, no sounds or beeps at all.

Is your hard drive full? Scan for viruses lately or run scandisk or defrag?

If not, then either you have a heating problem, a power supply problem or the motherboard is dying.

Is the inside of your PC dirty? If so, you'll need to clean it. It is clogging up the air holes. PC's need the air so they don't overheat and start frying your components.

When I called acer, they said it sounded like an heating problem, but they wasn't sure, hard-drive is not even a 1/4 full, most of my files are saved to a second hard drive, only the programs I run are on the main drive

Open the case and see if it has a lot of dust in it. If there is then use a can of compressed air to gently blow out the dust making sure that any open vents are not blocked in any way.

Also, if you have it inside a cabinet like you used to during the TPH days, then take it out. The newer PC's use more power and therefore generate more heat. Everything in your PC can generate heat including the hard drive, memory, video card, sound card, etc.

If you buy really good ones they will probably use a lot more power and generate more heat. You need to have good air flow to and around your PC to keep it cool. It may work in an enclosed space for some time. But after awhile the intensity of the heat will degrade your components. They will eventually fry.

Hmmm, you might even need a new fan. It/they (not sure how many you have) might be failing. You might also need better fans or more fans.
