I like it. Dark themes are not my first choice, but I like the crisp, clean lines.

My First Geocaching Experience
« on: October 09, 2009, 08:28:25 PM »
We went there but couldn't figure it out. I did figure out most of the clues and the final clue (I think) after we returned home. Here's the story line:

On Tuesday,a August 17, 1875, Louisa Bissinger, wife of Capt. Philip Bissinger, told her three children,Mollie Lillie, and Philip, they were going on a picnic. They crossed the Harrisburg ( Penn Street ) Bridge, walked on the Union Canal towpath towards the Tulpehocken Creek.

The children ages, nine, six and three years, skipped alongside thier mother in a gleeful manner. They reached the Union Canal Lock #49 around 5:00 P.M. The mother stopped, picked up stones and placed them in a basket and tied the basket around her waist. She picked up the boy and held him to her breast, and tucked each daughter on each side of her arms and jumped into the canal. The woman disappeared beneath the surface of the water, the children, still clinging to her also sank in the water.

What caused this woman to take her own life and murder her three children?

It was reported that Capt. Philip Bissinger treated his wife Louise with " undo respect" for many years, and " openly courted another woman. " Mrs. Bissinger felt if she took her own life, she didn't want her children brought up by another woman.

Mrs. Bissinger and her children were placed in the the Bissinger family plot next to the children who died previously, Louis P. 1869 age 4 months and an infant, died 1874.

Capt. Philip Bissinger re-married and his second wife is buried next to him.

The coordinates above will take you to thier final resting place. Answer the following questions to find the cache site.

How many flowers are carved on the back of the monument? = A

How many Bissingers are buried in front of the monument? = B

Look for a grave close to the Bissinger family plot with the name John J Wolf?????. When was he born? = C D E F

Final Location 40 BC.DDF
075 ED.4BA

While your here take a walk! There are many interesting things to see in this cemetery. Including Ten deer that live in the cemetery.

The final location will take you close to the site of the tragedy. And be on the look out for spirits that are said to haunt both locations. Please look for this one during daylight only.

Additional Hints ( Encrypt )

Its a mystery?

How many flowers are carved on the back of the monument? = 3

How many Bissingers are buried in front of the monument? = 2

Look for a grave close to the Bissinger family plot with the name John J Wolf????? (Wolfinger). When was he born? = 1 8 5 0

Final Location 40 BC.DDF
075 ED.4BA ??? We don't have a GPS. LOL

We found the Bissinger and the Wolfinger plots and answered the questions. I believe it is a date: 3/2/1850. I figured this out after we we back at home. We'll look again tomorrow. :)

Sounds like quite the riddle Steve.  :08:

I think that you're on the right track and it's just a matter of time until you have figured out the correct values for the coordinates, after that you may be able to pull up a Google map to take you to the cache.  :bigthumb:

Hmmm! Thanks for the hint, Ken.  :groan:

Final Location:

40 BC.DDF = 40 21.880

075 ED.4BA = 075 58.423

At first I was putting in 40 21.880 as the direction from and 075 58.423 as the direction to and google maps kept telling me that it could calculate those directions!   :innocent:

Then I realized my error and put them all on one line. Then the location revealed is in a totally different area. The story does mention this:

The final location will take you close to the site of the tragedy. And be on the look out for spirits that are said to haunt both locations. Please look for this one during daylight only.

The location is where the tragedy occurred. The first 2 paragraphs say where they ended up and drowned. That is approximately the same location according to google maps. It'll take 11-12 mins. by car to get there.

Ah ha!!! I think I know approximately where it is! We been in that area before. It has a lot of trails and walkways and small parks. We've even had a family reunion in a pavilion there.

Now, the hard part will be actually finding it. LOL

That's what I'll be looking for. I just don't remember seeing anything like that last time I was there.

Maybe the actual 'Canal Lock #49' is no longer there, it might now be only a plaque or a marker.

I didn't have the time to go today. Will have to be next weekend unless I have a day off. This do seem to be slowing down quite a bit. So, sooner or later I'll not have a lot of work.

Steve go 100 yds north east of where Broadcast RD dead ends @  Tulpehocken Rd ...or around 80 yards directly into the entrance

GPS is a truly wonderful thing ...I'm 800+ miles away And I see the landscape with a distance meter!!!

BTW looks like it's out in the middle of nowhere...perhaps the Cemetary itself!!!

Looks like there is an Airport and Fire Station off Bernville Rd just east of there

They did say something about wandering around and seeing the sites ...and something about "Ten Deer" definitely a hint!!!!!.......

at least that's where your Data Points lead to!!!!!

PM sent!
Thanks Keith.

I'm actually kind of excited about this GPS thing because there's a cache that has been giving me all kinds of grief, tried about three times so far with no success and maybe the GPS will finally get me to the find.  :08:

The first location is in the cemetery. I've been in there and have photographed the deer on other occasions. That is where it begins. However, the last set of coordinates lead to a park and a stream. That is where my family had a family reunion once. I've also been there with my kids just hanging out about a year or so ago.

I'll try going east when I get there. It'll have to wait until this weekend. I work 3rd shift and can't do much during the week.
