Title: SMF Udate 2.0.13 is out
Post by: Maxx on January 06, 2017, 07:30:05 AM
SMF 2.0.13 has been released, but I  would wait I tried to update, but failed due to old language files in some old themes. I never had this issue before.. I need to go ing and maybe clean out old themes first? Must dig in deeper on this error!

regards,
maxx

Thanks but it doesn't show up in the admin as the current version so there may be other issues with it?

Hmmm, if you try to install 2.0.12 it will tell you the 2.0.13 is the current version but will let you install it anyway. I just created a test site to see how the upgrade would go before going live.

EDIT: LOL! When I went into the admin it shows 13 as the current version (as it should) although I did not upgrade it yet. But no matter how hard I try (clearing the cahe, etc.) I can't make it show on my site or here! I guess it only shows on a fresh install.

Got the same as you when I uploaded the upgrade files and tried to run it!

Just read over thewre that if you run all maint functions and clear cache, after you install the update all will show good and table will be fixed! :)

It seems they are still dealing with the Patch, but I never use the patch anyway!
Mine seems good now :)

I used the patch but there is something wrong with the upgrade for the db. It still shows the same error if you try to run it.

OK, did 2 separate tests.

1.  Installed 2.0.12, fresh install. Used UTF8. Upgraded to 2.0.13 using the patch via the admin. It shows "2.0.13" in the admin and the copyright. I uploaded the db upgrade files to upgrade the db but got the language file errors.

2.  Installed 2.0.12, fresh install. Used UTF8. Upgraded to 2.0.13 uploaded all files from the large upgrade package via FTP. It shows "2.0.13" in the admin and the copyright. I ran upgrade.php but got the language file errors again.

I will run a final test without using UTF8 during install. It's the only thing I can think of left to do.

That be the language file for the core theme.. still at the old language.

If you update to 2.0.13 via FTP and then go in the admin and do the full/all maintenance it will update all you table and stuff, this should work well. it did for me!

I did that a number of times but still does not work! I even deleted the core theme folders although the error does say "default"

I'm starting to think it's a server issue of sorts.

what I mean is the not run the upgrade.php. just load the files via FTP and then do the maint. if you have any issues it will show in the maint process,, the language stuff need be changed by them.. I feel!

But if you do not run the db upgrade the db will not be upgraded and errors may show with some mods. It will give the error that says "your database might require an upgrade", etc...

Well when I ran the maint, compared the DB, no errors, showed version 2.013 and Not errors in the logs, and I have at least 10 Mods and they all work fine not issues and this what they say at SMF and of course (Used UTF8). I will wait and see what comes up at their site.. and get back but seems all is good at my surfacethemes live site!

You are correct but your database is not upgraded to the same version. Only the files are. When you try to install or upgrade a mod that checks the db version you WILL get that error! This has been happening since SMF 1.1 from 1.0.

I figured it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I initially thought the issue may be related to the UTF setting but it wasn't. The error when you run upgrade.php states that the language files are not up to date. Since the language files are pretty straight forward with very little php coding, I figured there should be something in them that was causing it or would lead me to it. I opened a file and the very first line is this:

// Version: 2.0; XXXXX

The XXXXX = the first name of the language file such as Admin.english.php. In that particular file you'll find:

// Version: 2.0; Admin - get it?

So, I used Notepad++ to search all of the files in the /Language folder for "// Version:". The results should show me every file that has it in it. All of the language files have it so it showed them all to me in a list. Only 2 of the files were different:

index.english.php and ManagePaid.english.php. The first had "// Version: 2.0.12;" and the second had "// Version: 2.0.10;". All of the rest had "2.0" only. So, I changed the numbers to 2.0.13 to see if it would work. If not, then I'd change them to "2.0" like the others. It worked!!! You can now run upgrade.php and actually upgrade your database properly!

I do think that the files should be "2.0" like the rest because come the next upgrade it may not work if they are different. I think the dev who was working on the files specifically numbered them to avoid confusion and they got into the final package instead of changing them to "2.0" again.

This is what I found on the SMF site: the last "quote"

Quote from: Shambles on Yesterday at 04:05:32 PM

Nothing appears in my Admin area and no patch appears on the patches page.

Quote

Please do not use this topic for support requests.
You will receive a much quicker and better response by posting in the 2.0.x Support Board or the Install and Upgrade Help board.

Quote

If you do not see the notification about the upgrade patch, please run the scheduled task "Fetch Simple Machines files" from the Scheduled Tasks page (Admin > Maintenance > Scheduled Tasks > Fetch Simple Machines Files (check the "Run Now" checkbox and click the "Run Now" button)).

;)

The patch file link should appear on the cust site shortly.

Yes, I figured out how to get the link in the admin shortly after you first started this topic but that does not help the db upgrade issue.

I looked in the DB. In the "smf_settings" table "smfVersion" is still "2.0.12" when the forum has been upgraded either by the admin link or uploading the files.

EDIT: In the first two test sites that failed to upgrade the DB, the "smf_settings" table "smfVersion" is still "2.0.12". In the 3rd test site that worked, the "smf_settings" table "smfVersion" was changed to "2.0.13".

Just updated all my sites again tonight, the first 2.0.13 patch they released was dodgy. http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=551094.0  I had the same problem.

Something is wrong here on this site too, because if I try to test the table bbcode from that post I just linked to, it comes up with a blank post.

This site has not been updated to 2.0.13 yet. so, maybe that is a bug prior to the new version.

I believe I got that latest but will download it again and retest on a brand new install just in case.

Well, it supposedly fixes a few bugs but me thinks it still has a bug. LOL

So far, I didn't see any other problems than the db and tables issue but I'm sure there may be another post or 20 in the coming days. LOL

Yeah, sorry Steve I should have looked at the version at bottom of page. then I would have realised I was making a fool of myself. lol..  I had downloaded the dud file, and updated all my sites with it yesterday.  Just redone them tonight, all seems well.

The db upgrade issue I've been posting about all through this topic and the table issue you spoke of. There was also the issue of it not showing in the admin but that has been sorted out now.

Do you need to upgrade the database for some reason?
Title: Re: SMF Udate 2.0.13 is out
Post by: Skhilled on January 06, 2017, 08:10:40 PM
The db and the files should both be upgraded. Some mods will check the version and will give an error stating this:

"Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade. Your forum's files are currently at version SMF 2.0.2, while your database is at version 2.0. The above error might possibly go away if you execute the latest version of upgrade.php." - or whatever the versions you are using are. The mod will not install properly. There may be other issues with this but I'm not sure.

Why use updated file but not the db when the db holds all of the important information? Without it, you have nothing. This has been an issue with SMF since the start of smf 1.1. Unknown has pointed this out and provided that fix to me back then. To this day, users still have that issue which shows that error unless you upgrade the db to the current version. Whenever I upgrade either via the admin or upload I always upgrade the db. SMF is riddled with topics about people not being able to upgrade cause of outdated smf tables that they must manually remove via phpmyadmin before upgrading their forums successfully. Been there before and not going back. LOL

"Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade"

That error can usually be ignored, the database has not had any updates/changes since SMF 2.0 was released. database version shouldn't effect anything tbh.

Why ignore an error when you can fix it? At the very least it will cut down on support for SMF. Why even add the upgrade files when they are unusable/broken? Does any of that even make any sense?

EDIT: If you do support or run a support site or software then you should fix a problem as it arises. If you can't fix the problem that's understandable. But to just ignore problems that can be easily fixed is a slap in the face of the users. It is also the exact opposite of support. How can you expect to keep users if you ignore problems? TP is very dependent on how well SMF does. If people leave SMF, TP loses users. SMF has already lost too many users for that very reason...lack of good support. Same goes for TP.

The whole idea of support is not to keep creating more support or to keep the same issues ongoing but to solve them. Less support time leaves more time for other things like actually working on the software you are supporting....having more time to make it even better. You can't do that if most of your time is going toward support issues that are ignored. When new users see the many support topics that are ignored will they even want to use it? Will the current users who see this want to continue to use it?

Just because something does not affect you personally does not mean it should be ignored.

Sorry.  Look I understand what you're saying from a support point of view.  I also think SMF should do something to kerb that message from showing when it's not needed, but can't see it happening.

I was merely pointing out that the database version message that accompanies a error message is a red herring and can safely be ignored. The error that it accompanies is the one that needs dealing with. If you see what I mean.

No one is saying you shouldn't try to fix it.

TP support I agree is a bit sparse, that's really down to the fact we don't have a active developer at the moment. and team members are a bit thin nowadays.  My own knowledge is limited, which I will openly admit, but I wanted to keep the project alive so it didn't disappear altogether. Hence one of the reasons I took the project on.  We (mainly down to illori's help) have managed two new versions since, TP 1.1 TP 1.2  A beta of TP 1.2R (Responsive).  Plus a working beta of TP for SMF 2.1 beta 3.

We'll see what the next few months has to offer, and decide where to go on this.  But yes support needs a good shake up, more staff and a good Dev.

Steve, no need to apologise.  We all get a bit frustrated at times, I know I do.  I'm guilty of not reading the whole topic before jumping in with a reply sometimes, that's something I need to work on this year.  Been a few staff changes at SMF, so we'll see how that goes in the next few months. They seem to be really cracking on with SMF 2.1 atm,  Which reminds me, we need to do the same with TP.

When I get fed up I play https://en0.elvenar.com/web/

From what I was reading they may be going for 2.0.14 which will have PHP 7 support first. They may be getting stretched a bit them working on both at the same time as well as 2.0.13.

I was playing TorchLight 2. They have mods for it and an editor called GUTS to created them as well as your own quests/levels. There is a thriving community full of various mods and dedicated websites. If you do a search for "Torchlight 2 mods" you'll find dozens of sites with mods including Steam.
