Synopsis:
Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. More than ten years in the making, Avatar marks Cameron's return to feature directing since helming 1997's Titanic, the highest grossing film of all time and winner of eleven Oscars? including Best Picture. WETA Digital, renowned for its work in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and King Kong, will incorporate new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters into photorealistic 3D imagery that will transport the audience into the alien world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and characters. --? 20th Century Fox

This is an Amazing Movie!!!
Do you remember when Star Wars came out and was said to be years ahead of anything that had come before as it related to filming techniques, color, animation, new 'creatures', etc, etc.
Well... this movie is light years ahead of anything you've seen in the past for any of those parts of what goes into making a movie.

And then there's the 3D effects.
It has been several years sense I last saw a 3D movie, so maybe you've seen better than me, but that last time for me was just 'OK' in that you could see the depth of the 3D effects alright, but the action didn't actually jump off the screen at you. Trust me when I say that the first couple of times an object, like a spear, came jumping off the screen I ducked because I thought it was going to tag me in the face!

The story is a good yarn about corporate and governmental greed and lack of concern for an indigenous population and the world that they inhabit because there is a huge fortune in minerals buried beneath their lands and homes. ... now where have we heard that before in real life!

Much has been made about the lush scenery, the beautiful landscapes, the new and wondrous creatures and this movie lives up to all of the hype.

So... what's your favorite kind of movie? It's in here!
This movie is an action/adventure-sifi flick to be sure, but has lots of other very strong elements as well.
Action/Adventure, SiFi, SiFi Fantasy, Mythology, social commentary and the list goes on.
Plus, an actual all out love story with love triangles and more.

As you may have guessed I like this movie a lot and I plan to go for a second time this weekend.  :2thumbs:

Conversation with Avatar's James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana.

I don't go very often Keith, but this one was a must see and now it's a *must see* again! In fact I'll likely be going back to see it on Saturday.

Went to see Avatar for a second time on Saturday with Joel and it was just as good.  :bigthumb:

In fact, in some ways it was better because this second viewing I was able to see many things that were missed the first time around. The amount and quality of the background detail is really amazing in this movie and I'm thinking that it would take several views before you began to really 'see' all that is there.
And... I was still ducking and dodging, trying to keep from getting hit in the face by all of those flying objects.  :bigteeth:
Joel was raving about it almost as much as me.

'Avatar' Stays Atop Box Office
This quote from the Wall Street Journal:

BY ETHAN SMITH

U.S. moviegoers shattered box-office records as they crowded into multiplexes for a holiday weekend marked by high-profile films. The lavish science-fiction epic "Avatar" led the way, selling $75 million in U.S. tickets and bringing its global tally to $617.3 million.

The estimated $278 million Americans spent on movie tickets over the past three days broke the previous weekend record of $260.8 million set in July 2008, when "The Dark Knight" was released, according to Hollywood.com.

Two questions Les:

Did you duck when they threw stuff at you?

Did you tear-up or cry at any point during the movie?
... yes I know that 'real' men don't do that, but I did!  :yikes:

The demo difficulty level is rather low, so I beat/finished it very quickly, however... there are several ways to proceed through the demo landscape, so once you have found the end you may find it very entertaining to go through it again but choosing a different path, I did.  :bigthumb:

Audiences experience 'Avatar' blues

This from CNN News:

Quote
(CNN) -- James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

On the fan forum site "Avatar Forums," a topic thread entitled "Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible," has received more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans trying to help them cope. The topic became so popular last month that forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about the movie.

"I wasn't depressed myself. In fact the movie made me happy ," Baghdassarian said. "But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don't have here on Earth. I think people saw we could be living in a completely different world and that caused them to be depressed."

A post by a user called Elequin expresses an almost obsessive relationship with the film.

"That's all I have been doing as of late, searching the Internet for more info about 'Avatar.' I guess that helps. It's so hard I can't force myself to think that it's just a movie, and to get over it, that living like the Na'vi will never happen. I think I need a rebound movie," Elequin posted.

A user named Mike wrote on the fan Web site "Naviblue" that he contemplated suicide after seeing the movie.

"Ever since I went to see 'Avatar' I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it," Mike posted. "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in 'Avatar.' "

Other fans have expressed feelings of disgust with the human race and disengagement with reality.

Cameron's movie, which has pulled in more than $1.4 billion in worldwide box office sales and could be on track to be the highest grossing film of all time, is set in the future when the Earth's resources have been pillaged by the human race. A greedy corporation is trying to mine the rare mineral unobtainium from the planet Pandora, which is inhabited by a peace-loving race of 7-foot tall, blue-skinned natives called the Na'vi.
