Site Refresh Time!
« on: July 07, 2015, 06:08:24 AM »
Hell, Matt hasn't been around in years!  :funny:

I've got a feeling he just did an auto-uninstall and then reinstalled new versions. I think a "site refresh" is in order. That is what I call it when you remove everything, upload the smf upgrade package and reinstall your themes then your mods. It helps to get rid of any rogue code sitting around. I do it once or twice per year on my sites, if I've been adding/removing things.

Lately we've been having a few issues with page load times, post preview load times and some errors that only show up here on Our FamilyForum, so it's time to follow the advice of Steve and Mick and reload the site's file system.

We may be off line for a while and some functonally may be missing for a short time.

Reload of all the SMF files is complete, now the reinstall of all the Themes and Mods can begin.

Something is off... these errors are showing now and no Mods are installed, including TinyPortal. Not sure why the errors should be popping up when TP is not even installed?

And now, while in the middle of working on the site files, my internet connection is mucking up the landscape.  groan:

Ken, I think you have loads of old files let over. especially in the sources folder and all the themes folders.

If it was me, I'd clean out anything that shouldn't be there after a fresh set of SMF files. Make sure it works, then install (clean) themes and then mods one by one checking the error log as you go.

For example, Your default theme curve folder has loads of TP files and old copies of its own files still in it.  I'm betting your sources folder does too.

This is why it's chucking errors.

Thanks Mick, I'll take a look at that... if my internet connection lets me.  laughing7

EDIT: Actually, it will have to wait until in the AM, after 2AM so  that I don't get into trouble with my ISP again.

again.

oops, you got a data allowance on your isp then Ken?

I can see all the leftover files in the SMF default theme, from the admin here.

Check out all the leftover files . Just go to Admin > Themes and Layout > Modify Themes >  Browse the templates and files in this theme.

You might actually cure the problem just by replacing the entire default theme tbh.  Worth checking your sources folder for leftovers though.  Back it up first so you have any custom images and logo etc.

Yepp... ISP crap again.

Looking at that folder tells me that you are right, so I'm going to delete and replace the Curve folder in the AM.

Sources has a lot of old files that need to be removed as well.

OK... a fresh copy of the SMF Default theme has been loaded, but we are still getting a few errors. Need to go through the Sources folder now to see what can be removed, but will need to stand down for now.
More later.

Yesterday, I logged in then nothing worked for me...wouldn't load anymore. Same for your cpanel. I guess you were working on it at the time.

Maybe so Steve... was it between 2AM and 8AM? That's when I was doing most of the work.

After uploading a fresh copy of the default theme and removing some of the leftover files from the Sources folder the errors appear to be gone... for now at least.

Tomorrow in the AM I will remove all of the custom themes and then try to start adding back some of the Themes and Mods.

BTW... my ISP showed my usage at 2.5gigs of traffic between 8AM and 9AM yesterday, which wiped out my available data and that's why I was a bit in and out. During my call to CS they claimed that it was all on my end, but my PC's were not doing anything other than Kay's FB. (mine was turned off)

It all worked out... they were really quick to give me 3gigs of 'Token Bytes' so that makes me think  that it was really on their end, but they didn't want to admit it.  :hah!:

Ps: Steve, is the post preview any better for you? For me it's blazing fast now.

I think it was between 8-9am...maybe after that but me thinks it was server site. Cause the site had issues and so did cPanel. cPanel issues are server side.

I keep telling you he uses old servers and not enough memory and cpu power.

Yes, I tried post preview earlier and is was very fast. The site overall is very fast atm.

Seems quicker to me Ken.  I see you've cleaned the files out nicely.  Error log should be ok now.

The custom themes are still there and working, so not sure if you've already re-installed them.  They seem to work ok.

Just installed TP 1.1.110 over at http://www.tinyportal.net Might as well give it a test there too.  See it blurts any errors.
