Title: Skhilled.com Downtime
Post by: Skhilled on April 20, 2010, 10:10:30 AM
I am changing hosting so my sites, skhilled.com and Doc Skillz (and my test sites) may or may not be available to you over the next 72 hours. I'll post something when it is complete. :)

Changing to another host is always a bother, but sometimes it just has to be done. Who are you changing to Steve?

Aspiration Hosting (http://forum.aspirationhosting.com/)

I've used them before right after TPH went down and they were pretty good. Very quick to respond, etc. They reason why I left was I was not used to hosting that used 755 permissions. You need to reset permissions if you install any mods. Back then, they did not have SSH available to clients and it was a bother to do it via FTP.

They now have it, although it is $1/month.

We have CG hosting here on the FF.
http://gcwebhosting.com/ (http://gcwebhosting.com/)

It's really good, with very little downtime or issues, but it has the 755 thing as well. It's not so bad after you get used to it.

I almost went with them once but the amount of databases was too small. Can't test anything with only 6 db's.

Stupid me changed nameservers BEFORE getting my backups!  :opps:

Have to change back then get backups then change them yet again.  :hah:

I hear ya. :)

Been thinking that my domain needs to be hosted under some third party, like Go-Daddy maybe, so that a move is not as difficult as it is with everything on one host. Of course, GC has given such good service that I don't really expect to move anytime soon.

Got the backup, finally. Now to change nameservers again. :P

Do not use Godaddy for hosting. They are not good from everyone I know that has used them. They also do not use cPanel which I know from moving clients from them to TPH.

Their domain registar is first rate, though. I've always had my domain and a few others registered there for many years and have yet to have any problems.

The domain registry was what I was talking about, their rep as a host is not very good.

just on a side note, I kept the domain reg site we had from tph, and still run it now, but only for friends and sell them at cost.

hanks for the info. I still have privacy from when I was at TPH and still do not have to pay. LOL I assume that I will not have to pay for it anymore as long as I own the domain. heehee

OK, now having major server issues on the new server shown in when logging into cPanel...

"Sorry for the inconvenience!

The filesystem mounted at / on this server is running out of disk space. cPanel operations have been temporarily suspended to prevent something bad from happening. Please ask your system admin to remove any files not in use on that partition."

I think we used to charge $5 for privacy at tph even though we got it for free lol

Well my offer still stands, I will host any of your sites for free, even if you just want to use it has a backup I don't mind

Thanks for the offer, Les. I might haveto take you up on it sooner or later. I'm actually talking to a kid at SMFArcade who is having a lot of issues are smfnew and was telling him to change to another free hosting. They changed SMF. No error log and a lot of other things are missing! I just was on his site as admin.

I did not terminate my current hosting yet. I never do until the new hosting works out.  riteon

If they cannot fix it I can just reset my nameservers and everything will be as it was. I usually do not change name servers until I see things are working. I just use the temp URL which will work indefinitely, actually. This time I changed nameservers...probably due to a lack of sleep from working OT and frustration.

I'm just surprised that Aspiration has given me this much trouble. First, they said it was something I installed in the db and I needed a new one...which I knew wasn't right because if the issues I was having. All I did was upload the files and import the db. Nothing had changed. I even changed nameserver back so I could get the backup then changed them back to the new hosting. When I changed back to the old everything was working as it used to.

Thanks, Les. btw, your client page does not match what you just posted for disk space. ;)

Also, how do you make money on it if it is ad-free?

CRAP!!! Got db issues. So far, either it won't work with the new db server or I lose all info after Dec 2009. :cry2:

I might be able to figure out a way to import the missing info into the db from the old but not too sure how. Will have to play with it and see.  :thud:

Maybe that is why I was getting those errors before...

I've decided to just copy all of the recipe posts I made and paste them into something before totally switching over. I can copy them to the appropriate boards later.

Yeah, but I can still retain the posts in case I can't import the missing info from the db. Will save me work later, if I can't.

And what are you doing up so late???  :2funny:

I know this is old...but I'm almost finished! LOL Finally...

I spent the weekend copying all of my recipes and important posts to Google Docs. The only thing left is the 2 joke sections. However, I created a test site and have started porting things over.

Then I'll move everything to a new server. Unfortunately, everyone will have to re-register due to a db corruption. :P

Since I've met my relatives (about 100 or so) in Maryland, I've been inspired to do things differently. I have a lot of images so a new gallery is also in the works.

Rats! I deleted the wrong db while cleaning out some old ones. That'll teach me to do things while being sleepy! LOL

Well, the site is back up but everyone will have to re-register again.  :opps:

I still have my recipes but just have to add them again.  :thud:

Sorry for the inconvenience. BUT, no more problems.  riteon I've added a gallery and will be added the new arcade soon.  :yahoo:

The site is going through propagation. So, you may not see it for a day or 2.

Photo Gallery and TinyPortal added. Will add the arcade today. :)
