Sounds typical for all of the releases we've seen.

Users of the new operating system say the upgrading process is buggy. But once the kinks are worked out, customers are liking Windows 7 a lot more than Vista

Microsoft launched Windows 7 in late October to much fanfare. But, just like with previous Windows upgrades, complaints about bugs have already started rolling in.

A whopping 31% of clients have reported problems with upgrading to Windows 7, according to a recent survey of more than 100,000 customers conducted by consumer helpdesk firm iYogi.

Exactly! I think I mentioned something about not trying it for the same reasons in another topic. I was a Windows beta tester for 95, 98 and ME. I know how there are...

Yepp... did a little beta testing for a while, so I head ya.

One I did was the Office 2003Beta... they sent me a pack of 18-20 discs that had everything in the Office suite.

The motherboard on my main PC failed the other day so I've been forced to use this one which has Win7 on it and it definitely is still buggy.

My main beef is that when I come back to it after the monitor has gone into power saving mode the screen comes back up and mouse moves but all else is frozen until it decides to start again at its own discretion or I have to reboot it.

The main I've learned about Windows is that whatever the requirements are stated by M$ you have to double them to run without any problems...um, most problems. LOL

I think I've nailed down the culprit.

When I disable autohide for the taskbar the symptoms seem to disappear.

I've Beta tested "7" since January '09 nary a whisper of trouble, the networking is child's play and "7" appears secure if you do your part! The only issues I've had are caused from vendors semi support...I'm not a big M$ fan ...but in my mind Win 7 is what Vista should have been...as important as upgrading to XP from Win NT...(I didn't like XP for along time!)

No idea where MS stole the code for W7 but I found it a totally different animal to previous versions. Up till W7 I've always used WServer as desktop OS because it's always been more stable. XP64 used the 2003 kernal so it was the exception.

The one thing I like about W7 is it doesn't appear to slow down over time as did all previous redmond releases including server. I never attempt an upgrade, always fresh install.

Upgrades are usually when the gremlins tend to creep in a bit more. The betas and fresh installs tend to work fine during testing but then they make changes to the retail versions that are not usually posted on the beta boards. They've done this since as long as I can remember. They know the testers will post their findings over the net. They've learned from that mistake since 98.

That was only with WinME Orakk... with the rest of the OS'es it was only three times a year.  :08:

I've always liked the idea of Linux and have tried many of the different flavors but could just could not get into using any of them on a regular basis, but the Ubuntu Netbook Remix that's now on Kay's Acer netbook works great and is likely to stay there.  :bigthumb:

You probably had hardware issues of some sort and probably needed updated drivers.

I'll try your suggestion Ken but in the past I've had no joy with hardware compatibility using Ubuntu. RPM based Linux works best for me, just one of those things I guess for Ubuntu does seem to be popular.

OffTopic? - Not really, W7 looks like a KDE ripoff to me..   :belly:

"looks like a KDE ripoff to me.."
That's funny.  :08:

Through the years I've been fortunate I guess... usually when I tried a *new* OS it was on a new PC... that was the case with WinME, XP, Vista and now Win7 and as mentioned by Steve, upgrades seem to be where the most complaints have come from.

With Win7 I'm just getting started on the new lappy, so it'll be a while before I really understand all of the little ins and outs, but thus far I'm liking it OK.

Orakk, on the Ubuntu... I had tried it a little before and liked it OK, but this time around it's working great on the Netbook, as it should because this flavor was designed especially for Netbooks. It's way faster than was the XP Home that came with the Netbook, or the XP Pro that I later tried on it. It's also about 1/2 as big on the HDD and I'm sure that has an impact because the drive is one of the 8GIG solid state types.

The learning curve is not as steep with it as it had been on past versions and that's good because Kay is now using it for some limited amounts of surfing and she is not interested in how it works, but only that she is able to get to the sites that she is interested in.

I have been contemplating putting a Linux distro on my lappy, even just as a test, been such a long time since I played with Linux!

LOL! That's not the only thing they probably have ripped off.

The learning curve has greatly improved in linux. Mostly, if you can figure out the Windows program equivalent in linux, you're in business. Surfing is usually faster too.

Linux is just too good to ignore nowadays. Only area I find Linux harder to work with is in doing movie backups and running some of my music software. I'm looking into using an XP virtual machine for those if the price doesn't drop significantly by the time w7rc runs out.

I haven't tried doing movie backups but Ubuntu has some pretty good music software. I'm no linux guru but I'm thinking that you might need a better video or sound card or drivers for them.
