Title: We Are Back Online!
Post by: Ken on January 05, 2016, 07:10:59 AM
Things are a bit disorganized for now, but at least we are open for business.

What happened? You have a good and recent backup?

No backup needed for the database, it was still intact so that part was easy enough... upload a fresh SMF, edit the settings.php and run repair_settings.php.

But the bad part is the missing folders... lots of missing folders!
I have copies of a lot (most?) of the missing stuff, but it will be a lot of work rebuilding everything. Some of the content may never be recovered.

Ouch! But what happened?

It all started when I tried to set up an ftp account for SMFHacks so that he could look into an issue with the gallery. The new account wouldn't connect, so I put in a ticket to see why it would not connect and during the time when my  host was working on that issue is when the site was lost.

SMFHacks was given access to my account, but he was in and out at about 7-7:30 AM and the loss occured between 12:15PM-12:54PM. An ftp account would not be able to dump the site that quickly... it would take many hours to do 2500MB using FileZilla, or some other ftp utility. So, seems to me that it had to happen server side.

And, Frank (the host) is saying that he has no backup available, the backup service is available, but it costs so I did not have it. He's going to give it to me at no charge from now on, but that's no help in the current situation.

Yepp... all of it is gone, look in the attached image from my ftp look under 'public_html' and you'll only see 'cgi_bin'. There should be lots of folders.
Folders for OFF, the test sites, cpg and lots of extra folders for all the other data. Like I say, about 2.5 gigs in all.

Wow! That's exactly what I saw last night. I thought it was strange but just assumed it would come back online later. I've found the easiest way to upload folders is if you have them zipped. Just upload the zip and extract it via File Manager. It's much faster than uploading each file via FTP. ;)

One of the reasons that I love my hosting is R1Soft backups. I never have to worry about losing anything. I can restore the entire thing or certain folder and choose a particular date.

And probably more space...

The specs on their 'Small' package are the same as what I have now.

Ken,

Very sorry you had to go through all this, I did about ten years back, but now my host has free back up restore and also a paid Pro system. and yest it worth it. I'm able to restore all domains at once or separately and or individual folder/s, or you can also compress and download back ups of the sites and DBs. you'll be back up in a few minutes.

Even if you only screw up the SMF site you can restore in no time :) good to have.

I your case I saw the same , looks like they screwed up ( the host )JMHO! but not much you can do when that happens, if they have no back up!

I've been with mine for 10 years now, and only had minor issues with their policies!

And very glad you got it done Bro! Time to Change up! see if they can miograte the site for you to the new one ( host)?

Regards,
Maxx

I've probably been with most of the hosting available at one time or another or help someone on hosting I've never used and this is the best I've ever had.

Damn it!  :o
After all this thrashing around the gallery still has the same issue that got this whole mess up started.

And you thought it would work better?

I thought that a fresh set of files should fix it because there would not be any edits to get in the way. Guess I was wrong.

About once every year, I down load the complete site, to  folder of same name, this just an old habit. I have about 4 so, one at a time, if large I let it down load over night via FTP. alone with DB zip, for the smf maintenance controls. noting that the settings.php file is in the download stuff and is not corrupt!

It may not be up[ to date, but sure saves lots of trouble, you also sync the downloaded site as you see fit!

I have used the host back up a few times and it does work well, but you never know with the today's hackers they even kill back ups if they want!

This just a thought for the future and for those whom no not!

regards,
Maxx

Yepp... I broke it again, I'll do a detailed post about it later. It was caused by me deleting ftp accounts.
