Blank Pages on Our FamilyForum
« on: November 04, 2009, 09:38:53 AM »
We've had some file issues here on Our FamilyForum today and I've been working on sorting things out.  {}

For some reason the site opened as a blank page this morning... don't know why yet, but it's back up and running now. It was necessary to do a full 'reload' of all of the SMF forum files and then start re-installing the various Mods that we use and the very first one (TinyPortal) had to be manually installed because the package manager wouldn't do an automatic install.
It took lots and lots of file edits.   :thud:

You may notice that some features will be missing today and tomorrow as I go through the rebuild process, this stuff just takes a while.

Sorry for any inconvenience... GPa

OK, here's a list of the Mods that should be working for you again:

    • Custom Copyright
... look for the 'Our FamilyForum' copyright in the footer, not in all themes yet.

    • Aeva ~ Auto-Embed Video & Audio
... lets you post a YouTube video using just the url for the vid.

    • SMF Gallery Pro
    ... pictures gallery.

    • Tinypic Plugin
... include pictures in your post.

    • TinyPortal
... TP gives us all those neat info blocks and extra pages.

    • Footnotes
    • Child Dropdown for Board Index
    • Ultimate Profile

It may have happened because of me working on the files.

Got the SMF Arcade installed, but the games are giving me a problem trying to install them.  :thud:

Yepp... uninstalled the arcade, deleted all of the db tables, deleted all of the files and then reinstalled.

It's giving me some errors on the install:

Quote
Table 'kenkayjm_forum.smf_arcade_games' doesn't exist
Table 'kenkayjm_forum.smf_arcade_personalbest' doesn't exist
Table 'kenkayjm_forum.smf_arcade_gameofday' doesn't exist
Table 'kenkayjm_forum.smf_arcade_scores' doesn't exist
Table 'kenkayjm_forum.smf_arcade_categories' doesn't exist
Table 'kenkayjm_forum.smf_arcade_favorite' doesn't exist
Table 'kenkayjm_forum.smf_arcade_rates' doesn't exist
... actually some of those tables do exist.

For the game installs I've tried game pack1 and when that didn't work I tried zipping a single game but no go there. In the past I've been able to ftp a set of unzipped game files to the server and install that way but that's not working either.

Been reading up on Steve's site, but so far the solution is not at hand.  :up2some:

I would have just overwrote the file with the large upgrade, then you would only have had to re-install the mods, I don't suppose you have a copy of the forum files backed up, I take a backup of the forum files every time I make any big changes, and thats 700mb on my site, the database I do about once a week now, as I don't have many posts these days.

The large upgrade is what I used.
My backup utility takes one each day, so that's not a problem.

Reinstalling the mods is the problem... had to do a manual on TP, a partial on the SMF Gallery and now this issue with the arcade. Guess I'll do a manual on the arcade as well to be sure the files all got edited.  :disted:

when I upgraded to tp beta 4 I just over wrote all forum files, but didnt delete nothing, then all I had to do was click apply mods and it was done, never deleted any arcade files at all,

I had E-Arcade installed before and for some time have wanted to go back to SMF Arcade and this seemed like a good time to do that.  :bigthumb:

When I was here yesterday the screen was looking like it lost all of the style sheets and had a tp load error on the bottom of the screen. I assumed that Ken was screwing around with the site and left.

SMF Arcade might be giving you problems if there is still old E-arcade code left behind or you have chmod/chown issues.

Don't think any of the old E-Arcade code is still there because all of the SMF files were replaced and the arcade files were deleted and the arcade db tables were dropped before installing SMF Arcade.

But the arcade code may not be the issue... before we were 'ourfamilyforum.org' the site url was 'mykimbrell.com' and that url is showing up in some of the errors associated with the game install failures.
Like this one:
Quote
Directory /var/www/vhosts/mykimbrell.com/httpdocs/FamilyForum/Games/ is not writable and chmod didn't succeed. Please make it writable manually.

Don't know why that is happening all of a sudden, but it must be related to the 'white out' from yesterday because it has never happened before... we do have a redirect for the old name in place but I don't know how that impacts the situation, as mentioned this has never happened before.

Got a ticket in to my host to see what he is able to tell me about those url errors.

The error you are showing me does mean a chmod issue which probably means there is a chown issue. If you can't change the /Games (or any directory) file permissions then your host has to do it for you. I assume you are on a server that uses 777 rather than 755. This usually happens on those servers. However, they usually do not have chmod issues, only chown issues.

Servers with 755 will usually have chmod and not chown issues.

The actual problem may not be the chmod settings because those can be changed. My host had sent me a note saying that the settings should be 755, not 777 and that's different from before because I've always used 777 up until yesterday.

To me the problem seems to be the url thing, because the mykimbrell.com should not be in the path that the game install tries to find/follow, what it should say is:
"/var/www/vhosts/ourfamilyforum.org/httpdocs/FamilyForum/Games/"
... and not:
"/var/www/vhosts/mykimbrell.com/httpdocs/FamilyForum/Games/"

As for the chown issue, that has been a problem several times in the past, but that part seems to be OK this time.
