Title: Henckel's 10" Sharpening Steel
Post by: Skhilled on August 13, 2022, 01:40:39 PM
I think my kids were in their teens (grown now) the last time I bought a knife set or a sharpening steel. I had time to kill yesterday and stopped at Bed, Bath, and Beyond to "window shop" around the kitchen section. So, I ended up getting a new cutting board and a sharpening steel. The sharpening (actually for honing) works great and I like it! :)

The cutting board:

We have something that looks like that.

Can't remember the last time we used it though...........sounds like something I could do this week?

The thing about knives is that you want them to be very sharp. When they are very sharp you will have to a lot less force to cut things...which will make it a lot easier. If you have to force a lot when you cut into something that's when things can become dangerous. You can possibly cut yourself, someone else or something...not good!

Most things like this say "sharpening" but they actually hone the blade. That means it will make the edge of the blade straight again after repeated use.

That being said there are steels that actually will sharpen as well as hone your knives. For sharpening a knife (except for serrated blades) I use something like this:

Kay and I were just talking about our knifes yesterday and how they need be sharpened. An issue for us would be the serrated blades on most of them. After reading your post I've been researching to see whats available for serrated blades and it gets confusing in a big hurry. I'm not about to spend 100+ for a sharpener, but at the same time I don't want to waste money on something for $15-$20 that won't get the job done.

Do you have any guidance for a serrated sharpener?

Personally, I do not own one for serrated knives mostly because I rarely use them. But, I've done a little searching and this one seems to be pretty good with all types. Keep in mind that there are manual ones like the one below and electric ones. The electric ones are a bit easier to use but even the manual ones are very easy to use:

I may get one myself cause I'll need it sooner or later. I do like to keep my knives sharp. I had this one for about 10 years...now that I think about it but it still work well but not for serrated.
