Just in the nick of time!

Currently I'm working on a bowl that is being turned for Tyra (my daughter) and it has developed a crack in the base and my concern was that it might ruin the piece, but after watching this video and picking up some tips my outlook and hopes are looking up.  :2thumbs:

I don't know much about this but is this is easier than starting over or just cheaper?

Both... or kind of.  :disted:

There are lots of different kinds of wood of course, but within each type of wood there can be all sorts of differences. In this case he is working on a bowl that came from an Elm tree and it has some pretty grain patterns so he wants to save it and this is one way to do that. The only issue would be the question of the final appearance of the piece having all those 'plugs' in it and is that look OK. To me he is a little over the top with so many dowels running through the piece, especially the aluminum rod, but it's all a matter of personal taste.

For the bowl I'm working on there would not be a need for all those dowels because it only has one small crack on the bottom of the bowl and it's not extending into the inside of the bowl so it's not going to leak if Tyra should want to use it for her soup.  :bigthumb:

I was a tad concerned about the metal bits possibly showing through eventually...
