[6th Update]GGMother Mallie in Hospital
« on: October 09, 2009, 03:49:44 PM »
EDIT: ... to include this great new pic!

Today G-GrandMother Mallie went into the Hospital for testing and we all need to keep her in our prayers.

At this point I don't have a lot of information, but will post updates as soon as possible.

Update:

Turns out that Mom refused to go to the hospital for her tests so she's still at home.

[2nd Update] This Time She Actually Went In!
« Reply #2 on: October 17, 2009, 04:52:40 PM »
This time it's official!

This time I waited until Yvonne called me to say that Mom actually went to the hospital before posting any information.  :wink2:

Here's the info on her room:
Phone # (717) 291 8236
Room # 236
Lancaster Regional Medical Center
250 College Ave
Lancaster, PA 17603

Yvonne said that Mom will be in the hospital for 3-4 days as they run tests and treat her for having fluid in her lungs, around her heart and in her legs... all of this because her heart is very weak and not functioning correctly.

When I talked to Mom she was in good spirits, but weak and tired from all of the tests.

Thanks Steve and Les.

We spoke for a few minutes this morning and although she's weak her spirits are still good... she even cracked a joke on me.
When I said, "I won't keep you on the line long Mom because I'm sure you'll get lots of calls today... in fact if anyone tries to talk too long you should just hang up on them." to that she replied, "So that means that I can hang up on you?"
We both though that was humorous.  :08:

To anyone who is going to call her, you may wish to keep it short so as not to tire her out.  :bigthumb:

Ps: For any who want to send flowers and such; you can use the address info posted above in the OP, but Kay and I have decided to wait until she gets home before we send some, but that's just us... you should do whatever seems best to you.

Ken;
I've looked at your mom's work, read some of her posts and was amazed! Though I've never chatted with the lady, my inner feelings are that she is a fighter and a true Matriarch of your family!! Please tell her from me that I want her back online, so I can meet this truly remarkable person first hand. may God be with you and yours

Yvonne just sent me an email and gave some good detail about Mom's condition, this is a copy of her note.
Thanks Sis.  :bigthumb:

One thing she wanted me to be sure to point out is that it's OK to call Mom and you should do so, but keep in mind that shes weak so the calls should be short.
"Ken, please write a note that would encourage family and friends to continue to call Mom but to keep it short. Don't discourage them from calling."

Quote
From Yvonne's email:

Mom's condition today:

1. infection in her legs just above the ankles. (they have increased her gout medicine)

2. infection in her urine. (they are giving her antibiotics for her legs and the infection in the urine.

3. doctor said this afternoon she needs to loose 10 lbs fluid before they will release her from the hospital.

4. was keeping her 3 or 4 days, now doctor said it may be 4 or 5 days until they can get the fluid under control.

5. heart is weak

6. shortness of breath is because of water in lungs, and maybe some of the medication they have her on causes some of that too. They started her on lasix in the emergency room and she is still receiving injections of that.

*** I should tell you she had some chest pain upon arriving to the emergency room yesterday morning. That happened when she was getting out of my vehicle into the wheelchair. She told the emergency room nurse as the nurse was helping her out of the car into the wheelchair. Mom hasn't, as far as I know, had anymore chest pain. She doesn't always tell me everything because she doesn't want to worry me. Sometimes she will tell an aid or a nurse or doctor things she's been keeping from me.

*** Dr. Patel (her doctor) of Cardiac Consultants is being contacted and he will come or send a technician this week to the hospital to check her pacemaker and the battery. That will make Mom feel better about it. She's concerned that the battery is too old and weak. But the phone check technician, Kit, said two months ago that the battery is still at 100 percent. The emergency room doctor, Danny, said yesterday morning that her pacemaker battery should last abt. 10 years. I don't think Mom believed him.

Ken, please write a note that would encourage family and friends to continue to call Mom but to keep it short. Don't discourage them from calling. Mom would be upset about that. I think she isn't adjusting well to being in the hospital this time. Maybe that's just because the fluid in her lungs is causing discomfort so that she hasn't slept much.

Let everyone know that Mom needs their prayers. Also, tell them her name is in the Salt Lake Temple. She will be prayed for in the prayer circle everyday for the next two weeks.

Ken, I leave it to you how you word this on your website. I'm tired today and maybe I don't make much sense.

Love, sis

We may have a road trip in the offing for sometime within the next few days.

Brother Russell is wanting to drive up to see Mom and wants to stop by and pick me up. We will likely do this sometime between tonight and Wednesday morning. My schedule is open and flexible of course, so whenever Russ is able to work out his plans is when it will happen.

Hey Gang!

Russell and I arrived in Marietta @about 10:30 this AM and then went to visit Mom around 1:30PM.

Mom is doing lots better and her Doctor may let her come home tomorrow... depends on how she is doing when he comes in to see her.
Her spirits continue to get better so it's looking good for now.  :disted:

Here are a couple of the pictures we took... there are lots more so you'll be able to see more tomorrow.
Yvonne, Mom, Russ

Ken, Mom, Russ
When encouraged to say something for the camera Mallie said, "Frog fingers"
... we were all amused.

No big change going on so far today, but Mom continues to feel better.  :bigthumb:

We are waiting for word now on the possibility that Mom may be able to come home today, but it's likely that she will need to stay another day.

EDIT: Turns out the Mom was able to come home from the hospital Wednesday afternoon and we had a great visit during the afternoon and evening hours.

We made a nice little movie that everyone will enjoy and I'll have it edited and posted soon.

As mentioned in my edit of the earlier post, Mom was able to come home on Wednesday afternoon and we had a great visit with her for the rest of the day and into the evening.
She was getting calls all during that time including from Ron and Phil and we got to talk to them as well, so it was a fun time for all of us.  :bigthumb:

Mom's Doctor had given her a new ointment to try out on her feet and legs to see if it would help them as she continues her recovery from the infections and fluid retention her legs were suffering from. So Mom called upon one of her many admirers, JK Kimbrell, to preform the task of applying this new medication and she also called on her Executive Assistant I.Y. Gray to video tape the event.
We had great fun making the video, hope you enjoy watching.

... so, do you think she got the chocolate cake?
