Post by: Ken on May 11, 2020, 01:02:35 PM
Been getting lots of "timed out" error pages today.

Yeah, still getting hit hard...DDOS. But for some reason your site has always been much slower than the rest. I'm thinking maybe an old mod might be linking to another site somehow which may have problems? Even well before all of this I've noticed that.

It appears that the DDOS has stopped or slowed down a great deal!

I also found removed two php modules that may have been partially causing the high loads. The sites seem MUCH faster now. This site still seems slower than the other at times but is still pretty fast atm. :)

I had also complained to the data center since they are supposed to provide "basic" DDOS protection. Seems to have started working better just after that.

Good deal!

I always wonder what people get from these DOS attacks, like do they get some kind of monetary reward, or do they do it just for fun.

Both, some hope to gather bank and other info if they gain access to your site and may try to blackmail you after they take over for you to regain control over your site. They may still leave a present on your server which may still allow them access later. This is why regular backups are truly needed in these times. You can always go back to a safe backup, IF you know when they originally took over and placed rogue software on your server.

We do daily and weekly backups on the hosting just in case we screw something up or something like this happens. However, it is really each user's responsibility to keep their own backups. What if ours fail?

The page load issues are back, I noticed it was really bad yesterday, it's a little better today but still really slow some of the time.

On all these sites:

https://www.jpr62.com/theme/index.php
https://www.ourfamilyforum.org/FamilyForum/index.php
... docskillz and jpr62 would not load at all yesterday.

Found a naughty customer doing things to make the dedicated server and the VPS' slow down and/or crash! The DDOS attacks were only part of the problem. All seems to be well for the moment...until the next wave of problems start. LOL Hmmmm, maybe I shouldn't say anything or I'll take something up!  :rofl2

Should've know better...but was trying to be nice. The guy was running a porn site but told him as long as it's legal and he doesn't cause problem, then it's OK. For many months there was no problem...until now. Had to suspend his account after Les found out he was causing a lot of the high CPU usage and processes. He said he was leaving for more powerful hosting...bye- bye. He'll have the same issues with each hosting cause whatever he's doing, he's doing it on shared and not a VPS or dedicated. He'll learn sooner or later...
