Grand Daughter Whitney's wedding is the 26th of this month!!! :thumbup:
So I'm making a salt and pepper set for her similar to the one in this link (http://www.rockler.com/salt-and-pepper-shaker-turning-kit) and this picture:

Hopefully my choice of wood gives the shakers a better appearance than the ones pictured above... it's difficult to tell from the photo's of the turning blank below, but the wood is 'curly maple' and is one of the most beautiful woods available.

RTFM … Actually that’s not always true! :hah!:
For two very good reasons I decided to practice this turning on some scrap Cypress that had been on the shelf for about three years.
Reason number one; I have not used this salt & pepper kit before and wanted to work out any issues on scrap wood before moving on to the curly maple, because… Reason number two; The curly maple is NOT free! (about $22 for this 12” piece)
It’s good that I did practice on scrap wood first because the plans call out for a 1” hole for the salt container to fit into and as you can see in the picture that is way to big. The solution would be to drill a smaller hole to correctly fit the container, but I don’t have a drill bit of the correct size so the hole will be drilled using the 7/8 inch bit that I do have and then sanding the hole to fit. A little more work this way, but the end result will be worth the effort.

I'm finally back on Whitney's Salt & Pepper shaker set... after a month off.
First I came down with some kind of bug-virus(?) that lasted about two and a half weeks and then we were off to Seattle for Whitney and Cole's Wedding. We were there for a week doing all of the things leading up to the Wedding and the afterwards events.
The Wedding was amazing! Lots of Family there including some that I had not seen for 30 years or more.
I'll try to post some of the pictures and details later.
Needless to say I was not able to finish this turning in time for the Wedding Gift opening, but hopefully Whitney will like it anyway. :disturbed:
Both pieces are 'rough' turned in these pics and the TransTint dye process has been started, the dye will help to highlight the 'curl'

The shaker that is still in the chuck has not yet received the dye as the one sitting on the lathe bed has.
This first application of dye will cure for 24 hours and then it will be sanded back until the dye only remains in the curl. At that point I'll have to decide if it needs more dye or can be finished with just the one coat of dye.

No pictures today, but progress is being made. :disturbed:
Finished with all of the sanding and started the finishing process.
First step was to put on a sealer coat of Lacquer (50/50 mix with Lacquer and thinner) then engrave Whitney & Cole's names and the Wedding date on the bottom of each shaker and fill with 'Lacquer-Stik Gold'. The gold filler makes the names show up very nicely. After all of that was finished I started spraying on some Minwax clear aerosol Lacquer. It will take at least three coats for a good finish, but I'll probably put on 9-10 just to make sure. laughing7

Whoops!!! :oops!
I'm making progress with the finishing steps, but more about that in a minute....
First this: :-[
The finish was cured and the buffing had began when I let one of the shaker covers get caught on the Beal buffing wheel and it was snatched from my hand and bounced off the cast iron lathe bed!
In this picture the resulting mark/ding can barely be seen inside the red circle because the sanding down process had already started. (I almost forgot to take pictures)
All of the finish had to be sanded off, all the way back to bare wood and then the process was started all over again.

Here's what the Beal Buffing System looks like, each of the three buffing wheels get a different compound and the turning is buffed out on each one in succession which gets you to the desired finish.

It may not show well at this point, but there are 9-10 coats of Lacquer in the shaker covers... they will look much better later after being buffed and photographed in a better setting and with better light.

In an earlier post it was noted that one of the curly maple shaker covers was damaged and had to be sanded down and refinished... well that's all done now including spraying on several (9-10) coats of Lacquer but things are on hold for now because of our weather here in T-Ville. It has been raining for several days and even though it's better today, the humidity is still very high (88%) so the finish has not cured enough for the buffing.
Maybe tomorrow it will be better. :2cool!!
