Upgrading Our FamilyForum to SMF2.0
« on: November 30, 2009, 01:28:47 PM »
The *Big Upgrade* will soon be at hand.  :bigthumb:

As most everyone knows the "Our Family Forum Holiday Trek 2009" will finish up on 12/05/2009.

Starting very soon thereafter we'll start this next upgrade to our forum software platform... maybe even the next day.  :up2some:

So anyways, here's what you can expect to see happening when you visit the site during the upgrade.
First, I'll need to place the site in 'Maintenance Mode', which means you won't be able to access the site until it's turned back on; and then we'll be working as follows:

1/ The first step will be to uninstall all of our Mods, or add-ons, like TinyPortal, the SMF Gallery Pro, TP Reviews and all of the other smaller Mods.

2/ Once the forum is striped back to the basic SMF 1.1.10 platform the next function will be for me to run all of our maintenance routines to make sure the forum is as clean and error free as it can possibly be.

3/ Then comes the major part of the upgrade... going from 'SMF 1.1.10' to 'SMF2 RC2'. Most folks who have already gone through the upgrade are reporting that this process is working OK, but as we all know, stuff happens.  :bigteeth:
Once we have reached the point in the process where the SMF part of the platform is installed and running OK the forum should be reopened so that you can gain access and do any posting you wish to do, but many of the features that are currently available to you won't be there.

4/ And from there it's just a matter of reinstalling our Mods and themes.

If you've been here for previous upgrades then you know that it usually only takes me a few minutes to go through the basic process, so even though I always make dire warnings about possible downtime there rarely has been any of that.
But this time may be different! ... yes, that's what I always say.

BTW, if you would like to get a sneak preview of what 'SMF2 - TP b5' will look like on the FF you can go to my Test Site for a little look.

Please note that not all features are installed to the test site.

Thanks Steve.
The only part that I'm kind of apprehensive about at this point is the Arcade install because of all the problems from before when trying to switch from the E-Arcade to the SMF Arcade. I am determined to go with the SMF Arcade so we'll just have to see how that works out.

Well, SMF Arcade for RC2 was just released. We patched all of the bugs except for one that Jeza is trying to fix now. If you uninstall a game it gives an error. Otherwise, it works fine on my test site.

Played a couple of them and everything seems OK.
Some errors show up in the log, but I'm not sure if it's the arcade, or TP that's causing the errors.

Weird, it's in the cache folder but for TP. Either something is conflicting with another mod or something is up with your cache. Try deleting the cache files and see what happens.

You can also try this to help decipher the "template - eval?" error:

We've set the MerryChristmas theme as the FF default.  :cool2:

Because of the upcoming software upgrades I've set our default Christmas theme a little early because we may not be able to use it after the software changes. I've posted an update request on the DzinerStudio forum in the hopes that they will port it to work with SMF2.0 but no progress so far.

Meanwhile, we'll enjoy it as long as possible.

The major step in the upgrade process has been completed.  :bigthumb:
We've now moved up to the SMF 2.0 RC2 version of our FF software platform.

It went very smoothly with no errors, but it did take about 15 minutes and that's much longer than any upgrade that we've done in the past. It was so easy, all me had to do was sit back and let the upgrade script rock on.  {}

As you will notice, many of the features that you normally see are missing, you'll see most of them come back over the rest of this day but some may take several days for me to reinstall. If you're jonesing for some feature let me know and I'll try to move it up on my to-do list.

Progress report:

I'm still feeling rather crappy, so the progress has been a little off, but here's where we currently stand in the process.

  • SMF2 RC2 installed and working good.
  • TinyPortal v1.0 beta5 installed and working, still have some issues that I'm trying to correct with it, mainly with the articles and the Shoutbox.
  • SMF Gallery Pro installed and working, but it still has the issue with some of the full size images not showing, will need to seek help on the Gallery help forum for that one.
  • SMF Arcade installed, but the game upload/install function is broken... throws an error for chmod issues. I'm researching that one on the Arcade help forum.
  • Still have lots more Mods to reinstall, some will have to wait until the Mod author's rewrite the code so that they will work with RC2.

It's going pretty good actually, this stuff just takes time and sometimes it takes some manual coding and sometimes it takes a bit of research on the help forums for the Mods to find a fix for an issue.

Currently there are only two themes available, the 'SMF Default Theme' and 'Aqua', you'll find them both in the theme block that is located on the forum page. Most of the functions in the default are correct, but in Aqua you may find a few issues... I should have most of that worked out sometime tomorrow.
... all of the old themes are still there and if you know how to do so you can access them, but they will likely be all flubbed up.  :bigteeth:

More later...

The Arcade is working now!  :2thumbs:

Got some timely help from Frank of GC Solutions, that's our site's hosting company.
Seems that the install routine for the Arcade had set the wrong path for the Games folder so when trying to install a game the install routine was looking in the wrong place. It was an easy fix once we were pointed in the right direction.

Ps: Not many games are available/installed yet, but over the next few days the inventory will be increased up to between 100-200.

Our Christmas theme is now up and running!  :cool2:

Many thanks to Bikken and the design team over on the DzinerStudio for their great work.  :2thumbs:

We now have three themes available for you to use, if you want to make a change just go to the theme block on the forum page and pick the one you like. I probably won't make another global theme change until after Christmas.

wont work on my site..

The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.  Powered by SMF 1.1.11 looks like I will have to edit the .xml :undecided2:

TinyPic has been reinstalled.

I didn't do an upload Les... it was still in my package manager from the SMF 1.1.11 version.
After checking on the SMF Mod site to see if it had been updated and seeing that it had not I thought, "Why not try the one in the pm to see what happens?"... when it threw no errors on the file check routine me had to go for it and it worked out.  :2thumbs:
