Title: My first project
Post by: Lesmond on May 16, 2017, 06:04:13 PM
Supposed to be planters, so far I am not happy,
I used old pallets to make them so they do look rough lol

Looking rough isn't an issue for me, it's called rustic and is more natural looking. ;)

The only possible problem I see is the bottom on the inside. Too many open spaces for dirt and water to go right through unless you want it like that for drainage. In that case, nevermind... LOL

The inside will be lined with plastic, and the boards at the bottom supposed to be like that for drainage.

I agree with Steve and as a first project it looks pretty good.

Here's a 'pro' tip... for your screws it may be useful to pre-drill a hole for the screws using a bit like the one below. Pre-drilling helps in avoiding splits in your boards.

I already have something like that in a kit that Lisa got me.

The next one I will use a nail gun, just got me a second hand one for £10 ($13) Oh and I got me a second hand chainsaw too lol :D

That nail gun sounds like a good purchase.

On the chain saw... they can be extremely dangerous!  :o
If you already know how to safely use one that's great, but if this is a tool that you have little or no experience with then training is key. Hands on with someone who is skilled in chain saw use is best, but if you don't have access to anyone like that then YouTube can be very helpful. If you like I can post up some links to some videos that may be helpful.

Hmm, Les', avy is cut off now. Not sure if that has anything to do with the smf upgrade or not...

Maybe it needs to be resized to be a little smaller?

I have used one before.
A few  years ago I worked in wood machine shop, many of the machines were very large and could cut timber upto 10x8 of any length, so yes I'm used to working with tools safely :)

Could be the chainsaw.  shocked003

Like the idea Les. A good use for the old pallets.  We used to have to send them back, some we still do, but we get a lot they don't want back and we have to dispose of.

I hope not :o

I have stained the planter now, and added a balustrade (think that what they called) I also took most the screws out and used the nail gun, looks a bit better without the screws showing I think. :huh1:

Are you going to use the first planter for one of the ends?

No that was just to see how I could make one,  and its not really big enough to hold seating

Ok, it's hard to tell how big it is but appeared to be large enough for that.

And nice new sig. :)

And, Lisa's opinion is the most important one.

Lisa had this cart in the garden for plants, but the sides were made from particle board so soon rotted, I decided to rebuild them..

Should I have pots inside and fill those with plants or just put soil in the cart?

Might be easier to care for the plants and the cart using pots. Although, it would still look nice with just soil and plants in it.
