I like it. Dark themes are not my first choice, but I like the crisp, clean lines.

Our Spiffy new 404 Error Pages
« on: April 13, 2010, 08:16:45 PM »
We've added a nifty new 404 error page to replace the old 'default' page that you would normally see if you reached the 'Not Found' page here on the FamilyForum.

You can take a look here:

Nice! I've been meaning to do something like this for about 5 years now. LOL

BTW, you've missing a capital "I" in the first line. ;)

I guess it pays to check these things from time to time... at some point during various SMF upgrades the codes in .htaccess file got dumped, so our custom page was not working.  shocked003

Fixed now.

I'm not sure what you did wrong but right after I log in I get the 404 page. I click "Forum" and then I can view everything.

Not able to make it do that here Steve.

I tried both Chrome and Edge using the member 'Mia' to login/logout and it seemed to work OK.

Ahhh!

Just happened to me with FF!  shocked003

Need to sort through the code to see what's causing the 404 error page to display.

It didn't do it to me this time when I just logged in. It only seems to do it sometimes for some odd reason. I've been cooking and playing games all day...after sleeping. LOL I'll try to get into this with my site or a test site. Hmmm, maybe a test site will be best then I can see if there is a diff from this site like a mod that may be causing it or some extra coding.

EDIT: After I setup the test site, I'll give you access so you can see if there's any differences.

Getting into the setup now.

How do you want to make the error page? With a TP article, or just a stand alone html page, or what?

Steve, you have lots of good stuff in your .htaccess file and I do not want to take a chance on screwing anything up! So I'll leave it to you to add the 404 error call in the file.  :hah!:

You can just add it at the end of it...or the beginning if you have to. Trust me...R1Soft is amazing! Check it out! ;)

No matter how hard you can try to screw things up, just a couple of click will restore it up to 7 days ago. It used to be at least a few months and the hosting can set it up as they wish.

I'm not liking the 404 page so far... not using a TP Article means that the top navigation bar (or facsimile) must be manually.

If you use a .htaccess in the main folder or a particular forum's folder it should work. I.E., putting it in http://docskillz.com/test404

Getting into the setup now.

Hmmm, just noticed this and missed it earlier... Do it the same as here, a TP article right?

The way your server and mine are setup is a little different, but my understanding of the .htaccess file location that we need to use is this; while there are several of the .htaccess files scattered throughout SMF the one for us to use is in the root(?) folder as seen in the two screen shots attached.

I'll go ahead and install the latest public release of TP and make the article this morning.

As far as I know, you should use the .htaccess file that is in the root folder of the forum you wish to use it on. That is, unless you wish to make it global (for site you have) then it should go in the /public_html folder. Sorry, I was very busy yesterday.
